The One Thing Standing in Your Way

Well, the 2012 Summer Olympics are in full swing! A lot of media attention is devoted to the Olympics, however, very little is given to the paraolympics which take place August 29 – September 9. We have some amazing Canadian athletes competing in the paraolympics, they really do prove that you can do anything that you set your mind to.

Need a bit of inspiration to get yourself moving? Watch a few of these videos, it is a good reminder that the only thing that gets in our way is ourselves. If you want it bad enough you will find a way to make it happen.

Is Your Pool an Accident Waiting to Happen?

Owning a pool in the summer can be fantastic! Help keep the good times rolling, complete an annual safety check. Whether it is an in-ground or above-ground pool it is important that every year it is checked to make sure that it is safe. The Lifesaving Society has created a checklist which outlines all the things to look for as well as a guideline document that tells you more detail about each item on the checklist.

Not only will this safety check help identify small issues before they become big issues, it will also help keep your family and friends safe while enjoying the summer sun.

Can’t Swim? What if You Fall In?

Swimming is a great way to stay active and cool in the summer.  But being around the water (public pools, backyard pools, lakes, the ocean) can also be a life threatening experience if you and your family are not prepared.

This week (July 21-29) is National Drowning Prevention Week through the Lifesaving Society.

Do you and your children have the essential skills that you need to be safe in and around the water? It’s not just about the people in the water. If you, or someone you are with, are around water and can’t swim there is still a risk. What if you fall in? What would you do? What if they fell in?

Get prepared, learn to swim and get all your family members to learn to swim too.

I don’t have time, going to a gym is too expensive, I don’t know where to start. These are really common reasons why people say they aren’t physically active. Well, here is the good news. The experts at the Physical Activity Line have pulled together a great article that walks you through a free total body workout you can do anywhere. 50 Things To Do Before You Are 12

This is a great article from Active for Life. Especially with summer here, this is a great time for your kids to start scratching things off their own under 12 bucket list. And what about you? Just because the title says it’s for kids under 12 doesn’t mean you can’t do them too – come on, release your inner child!

Are your kids spending too much time indoors? The National Trust of England is taking a fresh approach to getting kids active outdoors by publishing a “bucket list” – 50 things to do in the outdoors before you are 11 ¾ years old!

Bucket lists have become de rigueur for adults looking to cram excitement and adventure into their lives before old age.

But a bucket list for kids? Are we really “over the hill” by age 12?

The truth is that our physical activity habits – and our connection with nature – are best established when we are children. The National Trust has recognized that fact and launched their bucket list campaign to get kids into nature at an early age.

The National Trust has also created an online, interactive bucket list so your child can participate and learn more.

Hats off to the National Trust. In keeping with its proud history, it is again showing leadership and imagination to promote the value of nature!

“Unsweetened” Foods – Not As Healthy As You Think

I came across this article last week and was shocked by two things. First, the actual content of the article, the examples given. Second, that I had not given these products much thought, that I had been bamboozled by the marketing efforts of these companies.  The author, Dr. Yoni Freedhoff, is a family doctor, Assistant Professor at the University of Ottawa, and founder of Ottawa’s Bariatric Medical Institute. He says it like it is, no sugar coating.  After reading this article you will think about “unsweetened” foods in a whole new way.

Is Exercising Outdoors Better For Your Health?

The Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry looked at a number of different research studies and found that “compared with exercising indoors, exercising in natural environments was associated with greater feelings of revitalization, increased energy and positive engagement, together with decreases in tension, confusion, anger and depression. Participants also reported greater enjoyment and satisfaction with outdoor activity and stated that they were more likely to repeat the activity at a later date.” Click here to read the full article.

Here is the great part, it doesn’t matter! You can start anywhere! Click on the picture below to access an online trail map. This map has a lot of great information, including:

  • which parts of the trail are paved, gravel or dirt
  • where the off-leash areas are for dogs
  • location of parks (it also lists what amenities are available at each park)
  • trail distances
